Title: The Retrogaming Times

I just learned of this online retro gaming newsletter and wanted to share it here: The Retrogaming Times! The Retrogaming Times is the furtherance of Retrogaming Times and Retrogaming Times Monthly, two of the longest running retrogaming newsletters of all time.  This newsletter is entirely hobbyist driven and content created by retro fans.  It even welcomes contributions from readers.  Be sure to check out the site for their latest issue and for the back issues.  The first issue was released in March 2016.

It is!  I used to read Retrogaming Times Monthly but it just stopped happening.  It's cool to see that it has a legacy that continues.  I printed all of these as PDF files (from the web page) to read on my tablet.  :)

I must have missed this so far!
Love the basic layout. The US perspective on classic gaming is always intriguing as it was so different to the UK.
I read the P-51 Mustang article. What a heartwarming story.
A lot more to read but I'm hooked [emoji106]

For anyone interested in getting these in PDF, read this update:

Greetings,

Breaking the "six release announcements per year" cycle for a very special announcement.

This is an official announcement that the long anticipated Newsletter Legacy Archive is now live.  This is a collected archive of every issue of Retrogaming Times, Bit Age Times, Retrogaming Times Monthly, and The Retrogaming Times in .PDF file format, ready for direct download.  Over 200 total issues across more than 20 years!

The link to this part of the site can be found on the main index: www.classicplastic.net/trt

Retrogaming Times, Bit Age Times, and Retrogaming Times Monthly each feature single download links to obtain every issue in each respective newsletter.  Issue of The Retrogaming Times will have .PDF files added to the Legacy Archive as they are published.

PLEASE read the formatting information on the Legacy Archive page so you understand exactly what you are downloading, as most issues will have download options for two different layout configurations.

Additionally the entire archive is backed up, offline, in three locations.  There is no need to stash the whole thing away or redistribute it elsewhere.  In fact I would rather the archive not be redistributed at all, so that any updates or fixes will always take place at the top.

If you notice any problems, links that don't go anywhere or point to the wrong file, please contact me using the e-mail contact on the Legacy Archive page.

Thank you very much for your patience while this undertaking was completed and thank you for reading The Retrogaming Times.

For those interested in contributing to the next issue (January 2018), the deadline is December 22nd.

David Lundin Jr is certainly very upfront with his views, particularly his hatred of British gaming. Personally I think he's talking rubbish, and the mag suffers from being too Yank-centric. He mentions Robocop 2:

"one thing will be instantly apparent: that bleeding in your ears, yeah, that's the sound of a British game developer.  Sure enough, Ocean Software developed RoboCop 2 for the NES, and it plays like a bog standard British-developed platform game of the time"  and "a mess of over-animated graphics, flashy and overly bright colors, ridiculous enemies, garish background patterns and all the other out of place garbage generally associated with British developed games of this era."

Yes, British programmers were terrible at programming games because they were British. Especially Rare who did Donkey Kong Country and so many other awful games at that time!!
Title: Re: The Retrogaming Times
Post by: TrekMD on May 07, 2019, 17:07:55 PM
You can always contribute to the magazine and give an opinion that is not Yank-centric.  It's easy enough to contribute to it.

On the other side, there was a really interesting article on the story behind and merits of the Atari 2600 classic, Yar's Revenge.

I think that article he wrote is beyond rude and in fairness complete drivel.

The rest is decent.

And I will say what I said before.  Anyone can submit an article to The Retrogaming Times.  Feel free to submit something with a different point of view. :)
Title: Re: The Retrogaming Times
Post by: Shadowrunner on May 23, 2019, 15:49:34 PM
A different point of view is fine as long as you are respectful. This guy completely trashed the entire British video game industry of the time. I was going to question how this article even got approved but then I saw he's the chief editor so I guess that explains it. Very poor taste IMO, and I'm not even British!
Title: Re: The Retrogaming Times
Post by: TrekMD on May 23, 2019, 16:44:05 PM
Agreed.  It doesn't have to be an argument, just a different perspective.
Title: Re: The Retrogaming Times
Post by: Spector on May 26, 2019, 13:07:11 PM
I was quite surprised when going through other issues that in September 2017 he headlined with an article on "Manic Miner's Forgotten Conversion!" I thought, "Eh?" Manic Miner is a British game, and more than that, a British ZX Spectrum game!!! Why would he do an article on that? Everyone knows the ZX Spectrum is rubbish! In fact, it's even more rubbish than soccer!! :D

So I read it with gritted teeth, but no, he was incredibly complimentary. He said the following: "Unlike a lot of the rose-tinted perspective concerning early home computer games, and ZX Spectrum games in general, Manic Miner is honestly a very polished and fun to play game." Well, how about that! While ZX Spectrum games in general are rubbish and it's just a rose-tinted perspective that makes British people think they're any good, Manic Miner is actually quite playable! Well, for a British game anyway!  ;D ;D ;D

Sorry Mr Lundin, but you don't know what you're talking about. I think you should stick to what you know best, like Nintendo, Sega and... er, Nintendo ;)

lol, he has truly upset you mate.

I just take it with a pinch of salt lol, i think we are as critical of US versions of games as some of them are of ours..

Fair enough heh heh I suppose we've all got our prejudices; just look at the signature on my posts 😁 Maybe I'm worried about the Americanisation of history,  and even people in the UK now talking about the Atari being followed by Sega and Nintendo when that didn't happen here. But he's an American so if he wants to slag UK stuff off, that's up to him!😎
