How in living hell do you not own Streets Of Rage 2?  ???

In my opinion the best game you own is Golden Axe.

hmm... Pretty sure I owned Streets Of Rage 2 when I originally had the Mega Drive, bear in mind this collection now has been brought back since about 2004, I sold all my original stuff in 1998 to buy games for my saturn and a second hand ps1... I know, unforgivable lol

I did like Streets of Rage 2 though it did frustrate me slightly. Must admit I never saw Toe Jam and Earl, is that actually any good? I have Wonderboy and the Dragons trap on Master System, is that the same?

"EDIT" hey, pretty sure I'm not going nuts, Wonderboy 3 was only on Master System right?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonder_Boy ... gon's_Trap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonder_Boy_III:_The_Dragon's_Trap)

which I have ;)

Toe Jam & Earl is one of the greatest and most original games ever made:

I could probably recommend 10 more games that you don't have with ease!!!!

wow, thats impressive lol, might try it out. only problem with these games is finding them at a reasonable price

I saw mercs on ebay for Master System and Mega Drive, MS is cheaper, might watch out for it, I need to go back to car boots etc to find some proper deals lol

Both Mercs and Wonderboy III are very common so should be able to be picked up for less than a fiver.

mercs isn't too bad but wonderboy at the moment is expensive, a full one is a tenner + P+P and a cart is 7.99 on ebay lol, I'll keep looking

meantime, feel free to list the others you mentioned you could suggest lol

I wanna get the Mega Drive E-swat version, the SMS one I have is a bit poo

Ghouls n Ghosts is probably my personal favorite of the games you have so far.

But, it's easy to list dozens of quality games that you're missing... first 5 that I thought of: Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, Thunder Force 3, Shinobi 3, Streets of Rage 2.

(I have the SMS versions of Xenon 2 and Rambo 3)

Mega Turrican
Shadow Dancer
Zero Tollerance (wow FPS??)
the punisher

theres a few others I wanna look into, is Battletech any good? I saw a vid of that and the graphics look excellent

Not played Battletech.

The Punisher might be a bit out of your price range . . . .

its strange, I can't remember what system it was for now, I'm pretty sure its a 16bit game or possibly Master System, its a top down perspective and it looked like really good fun, you pilot something around a map and have to kill enemies and avoid their fire, though its mission based and not a scrolling Shmup

I'm gonna look into Mega Turrican now actually

How is Cannon Fodder for the Mega Drive?
Title: Re: The Mega Drive Thread
Post by: dcultrapro on August 28, 2012, 16:47:50 PM
pretty good I'd say, though I do slightly prefer the Jaguar version because of the improved sound and what not but theres really not a lot of difference between gameplay/graphics at all

Punisher is going for £1,000!!! holy fcuk, and Mega Turrican is nowhere to be seen, though I SERIOUSLY remember that front cover (googled it) think I may possibly have owned it or been tempted to buy it in the past

I was lucky with my Punisher, I got it for £28 when it usually goes for over £100!!!  :o

I picked up Mega Turrican a while back but can't remember how much I paid.

Yes it does!

I have played the 3DO version of Cannon Fodder. I was not sure what Genesis games were not released as Mega Drive games and vice versa. I do have Toe Jam & Earl. So I will second that game.

Granada is amazing, the scaling and rotation effects on the bosses are amazingly impressive!!!

It was only released in the US and Japan so you will need to seach worldwide, I paid about £10 for mine and the exchange rate is great at the moment too.

Alisia Dragoon is pretty good, if you like that then you will like a game called Jewel Master too.

I remember you saying earlier about ESWAT, if you like that them you will love Rolling Thunder 2.

I picked up Wrestle War a while back as I LOVED it when I was younger, sadly it has aged terribly!  :(

I've put an offer in on Battletech on ebay, I want the following ones sometime but doubt I will ever buy them:

Castlevania Bloodlines                    (buy it now £99)
Granada                                      (buy it now £17.99)
Gunstar Heroes                             (£40/£50)
Mega Turrican                              (£40)
Shadow Run                                 (£45-£149... there is also a Mega CD version? WTF??)
Wonderboy 3 Monster Lair               (bidding on a cheap auction)

any others I should consider that might be closer to my price range? I've downloaded all of them as ROMs to try out and so far all of the above are pretty good

Wow, I can't believe how much shadowrun goes for in the UK.
I guess that's because it was never actually released on the Mega Drive, just the Genesis. You can buy a copy on ebay.com ( the US site ) for way less. Even with shipping it shouldn't cost anywhere near the prices you mentioned.  :)

The original name for the Sega Genesis in North America was the Atari Tomahawk!

Sega wanted to call it something "American" and chose that name but Atari hated it and told Sega they thought it was a bit offensive (to Native Americans). As they were the ones set to release the machine in the US at that time they got to change the name and one of their programmers called Steve Rhyno (who programmed Toki on the Lynx) came up with Genesis and it stuck, even when the deal with Sega fell through. He chose it because it was supposed to represent a new start, being the first fully 16-bit console on the market, not for any religious reasons.

If you like your RPG's then get buck Rogers. It's a bit different from the like of phantasy star, but equally if not more enjoyable. Graphically awful and sonically mediocre, but massively playable.

Mega lo mania is another great title..

Battletech got a snip of a look in SEGA Magazine Issue 3:

'Battletech:it's utterly Brilliant' they say Absolute Entertainment did'nt have a licensce to produce Sega games in Europe.

Sega magazine felt Battletech was better than Desert Strike due to:clearer strategic gameplay, larger range of weapons and abilty to stomp on smaller robots'

On different note:

I really enjoyed MD Ex-Mutants. Not a looker but had me hooked.

It actually came out in Europe for the Super Nintendo, but apparently, nobody played it, because it's still pretty hard to find around, ah, my usual places. It was... all right, from what I played of it, I suppose. Basically felt like the original Putty if the levels scrolled in every direction, instead of just up. And it still has that fucking cat I hate that fucking cat so much.

I can't imagine that the Genesis/MD version could be that much different, really. Hopefully we see the prototype, anyway, just for completion's sake.

Maybe, maybe not.  It would have depended on how much Nintendo pushed Atari's leadership.

Agreed but that's the whole problem. The leadership chose not to in the first place hence the downfall I suspect.

It was Warner Bros. Atari that were approached to distribute the Famicom/NES in America though (who chose the 7800 instead) and it was Tramiel Atari who were going to sell the Genesis.

So completely different people involved each time.

I read something, probably in the book Game Over, that Atari was only really interested in the NES so that they could bury it and leave the market open to their 7800.

Does anyone have the Mega EverDrive for the Mega Drive/Genesis?  I found this video review of the flashcart and I wanted to know what the experience was for anyone who has this.  I think this is the only flashcart for the system.

That's good to know.  The NES Everdrive works great so I figured this one would too.  It's just that it is a bit more expensive than the N8 and I wanted to check before spending the money.  :)

You just reminded me Trek, I keep meaning to ask you what you think of the Genesis/Mega Drive being a new owner.

What are your thoughts on the system in general and what are your favourite games?

I must say that I love it!  It is a fantastic system and I'm quite glad I got it.  The controller is great also.  It is just right in terms of size and shape so that it is comfortable to use.  I'm still trying out the games but I do have a growing collection.  I have more stuff coming and I'm eager to get the Mega Everdrive but it is sold out.  It came back in stock but it was gone before I could order it.

So, the titles I've enjoyed the most so far:  Altered Beast, Batman Forever, Battletoads/Double Dragon, Gauntlet IV, and Vectorman.  I plan to play several other titles this weekend so that list will likely grow.  I am waiting on some Sega CD titles as well.  :)

While playing with my Genesis today, I ran into some issues with the two controllers I have.  The 6-button controller wasn't as precise for controlling Ms. Pac-Man and the 3-button controller has some buttons that won't work.  So, I looked up videos for fixing them.  I found these two nice videos on how to fix and restore the controllers. One focuses on cleaning the plastics while the other focuses on cleaning the circuit board/contacts.  Here they are...

I very much prefer the Sega official sticks, both of them, even the original 3-button arcade stick was a rock solid piece of hardware, very durable and comfortable to use. I have one of those Asciiware sticks and hate it, as I find the buttons can easily wedge themselves in the housing and not pop back up sometimes.

Just read this thread from the start. Great stuff! That tech demo is cool and the clip of Peter Griffin playing Moonwalker, lol. Also the Atari Tomahawk, WTF! I'm loving the insane Mega Drive knowledge.

One thing that does concern me however is the recommendation to buy some of the more obscure and rare games. They command some hefty prices and appear a little elitist. Are they actually any good or is it purely because they're rare? Basically, is it more style over substance (willy waving 'look what I've got' ammunition)?

In other words, they're out of my price range and I'm jealous  :21:

With the Mega Drive at least, some of the rarer games are among the system's best. Thankfully if you are not bothered about having originals then repros can be picked up very cheaply indeed. See the latest retro purchases thread for some images of the ones we have been buying. I myself just picked up the superb Snow Bros. for less than £10!

I have a few of those, I always joke that if I go bankrupt I'll just sell off my old Saturn games.

EDIT:  I'm just wondering, are the Shining Force games that rare, or are they just high in demand as classics (like Earthbound)?  I remember them being pretty common at used game shops/flea markets in the 90's, either way I'm glad I loved RPGs from a young age and snagged them back then.

Just watched this.  I did not know this extender existed.  Does anyone own it?  I think I agree with him, though, best to spend the money on a game than this piece of plastic.

When I bought my first Sega CD back in the early 90's it came with the extender, and since I had a model one Genesis I did use it. And yes there was a small plate that held them together, no duct tape required :21:

As nice as this is, I can't help being disappointed that the Megadrive isn't a working one. No technical reason why not. I suppose licence wrangling would be a problem.

Just a little pdf I was creating a couple of years ago just for fun not to sell was a game cover comparison for Megadrive games, planning to hit 100+ pages, only got to 23! So was going through some old bits and rather than delete it I would upload to give people something to look at for 10 mins, anyway you can view it here;

I love the Sonic The Hedgehog games on the Sega Mega Drive they are just classics. My favourite Sonic game Is Sonic 3 And Knuckles :)

I love Jewel Master that game was very challenging and I love the soundtrack as well.

I remember playing Ballz that game was just so fun to play back In the day.

Another game I loved Is Zero Tolerance a brilliant game. It took me ages to get to the final boss at the end. I also loved that each level gives you the password. I remember always writing down the passwords on paper :) Love the cover art of the game as well.

Sparkster Is just a classic game to play as well. I played Sparkster a lot on the Sega Mega Drive and loved the soundtrack as well.

I love Eternal Champions as well that game was awesome to play back then :)

Added Ghouls & Ghosts to my MD collection. In really nice condition too.

I've read this is a bit more manageable than the ridiculously hard Super G&G on SNES. I play that on PS2 using the Capcom Collection which removes the slowdown that is evident on SNES.

However no G&G game is a walkover. I still play the original Ghosts & Goblins - usually on Wii's VC - but I remember playing it in the arcade too. G&G on MD is tough - have go to level 2 though which I haven't managed on Super G&G!!!!

I had the SNES version!!  :)    Had it on MD too.

Sorry to say in a Sega thread but it was a bit better on SNES - or at least I preferred that version. It moved faster (which surprised me) but looked and sounded a bit better too. But a lot of this comes down to taste.

I played it to death - was able to complete it. I found some hidden sections including one that gave you an enormous weapon that gave you a chance against the last boss.   But I liked the fact it had lots of little hidden treasure rooms and secret bonuses etc.

After looking at that video it looked like it ran at similar speed to the SNES version as I remember it. Assuming that video is of the NTSC version, I wonder if the SNES version was optimised for PAL.  Or maybe I just remember things wrong. :)

I have Battletoads for Megadrive. It looks better than the NES game obviously but it feels slightly less polished in its presentation. Plays great though. The difficulty feels toned down though that is no bad thing.  I was able to get to level 7 on NES but that was quite a few years ago now!!!!

It says the "Asian version" on the box. Not sure if that is significant.

Really good video. We did rent the Madden '93 Championship version. It is probably the best version for the Sega Genesis. Myself and another friend used to take turns buying Madden each year. I first bought "92, then he bought '93, then I bought '94 and he bought '95. The series had changed in my opinion and after that we moved on to different games.

I like Madden '94 the best. Still recall buying Madden '98 which had the two new expansion teams Panthers and Jaguars. It was cool for that reason. Kind of a fitting end to Madden on the Genesis.

Funny thing at the time. Folks were lining up to buy the Playstation version of Madden '98 and maybe even the Saturn version as well when it went on sale but the poor Genny had a full display with no waiting. Hahaha! Good times!

Have that too. Not sure how I came across it. It's cart only and I tend not to buy unboxed games. It's quite a nice port. When I switch my Megadrive region switch to JP I get a Japanese title screen. There are quite a few early cartridges like that. :)

Other MD shmups I have:  TF3, Twin Hawk, Hellfire, Musha (repro), Space Invaders '91, Zero Wing.  All very solid games.

I have some of those titles you listed.  Has anyone seen any of these new games?

John Hancock continues his videos ranking games for the Genesis from various companies. This time he is ranking the five games by Black Pearl Software.  I do own one of these games, seaQuest DSV.  As a fan of the series, I had to have it even if the game is just OK.  Check out the video...

John looks at the 18 games made by Accolade for the Genesis/MD and ranks them.  Looks like most of these games are rather weak.  Check it out...

Hmm, I'm surprised no one has made comments on the last few videos, particularly with Tengen games.  Hopefully this one inspires some posts.  Here is a video by John looking at the 28 games Acclaim published for the Genesis/MD.  This is another publisher with lots of games!  Check it out...

U.S. Gold published 14 games for the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive, all of which are ranked by John on this video.  I don't have any of these for my Genesis, so I can't say anything about any of the games myself.  The Hulk one looks cool.

Did you know Virgin Interactive released 22 games for the Genesis/MD?  I didn't realize they had released so many!  On this video, John Hancock ranks all of these games.  I have Cannon Fodder but on the Jaguar, not on the Genesis.  For the Genesis I do have Cuck Rock, Chuck Rock II, and Robocop vs Terminator for this list.

Electronic Arts published 18 games for the Sega Genesis in 1993 and some of its best. John Hancock ranks them on this video.

I do have several of these titles!  I have General Chaos (even autographed by Brian Colin), Haunting Polterguy, Desert Strike, and Jungle Strike.
