Title: The ColecoVision Thread
Post by: TrekMD on January 25, 2013, 20:52:01 PM
Though I don't have a ColecoVision, I found this video on YouTube and thought it would be fun to share it.  Don't blink, though, as you may miss something!   :D

I love that the voice over on the commercial says that you can play Atari 2600 games but the version of Donkey Kong on the screen is the Intellivision version!

I really like how Coleco was not afraid to take chances when releasing games and add-ons.

You'd have to wonder where they'd be had they not gone under.  They might have been a significant challenger for Nintendo when they introduced the NES.

Very nice thought! I always wished for the Intellivision adaptor. Maybe if they would have competed against Nintendo it would have been a real add-on.

I think they might have come out with a console that would have been better than the NES, actually.

I am not so sure.

What you have to remember is that Coleco didn't actually create the ColecoVision, they licensed the MSX technology and turned it onto a console.

I suppose the next logical step for them would have been to license the MSX2 hardware and then turn that into a console too.

Would have been cool to see Atari, Coleco and Sega taking on Nintendo. Might have forced Sony to jump in sooner.

Well Sony were one of the creators of the MSX, which of course became the Coleco!

There is also a Sony version of the CD-i too!

I guess that was the trend of the times.  Even Atari did that, right?  The Lynx wasn't really created by Atari.

I don't think so.  All those machines had good hardware.  It was the software support that was the problem for these systems.  Never mind all the poor decisions made by Atari.

The MSX/Coleco hardware was very much set up to be fairly easy to code. It's one big downfall was that it was terrible at scrolling.

I remember going with my brother to one of those discount shops in the high street many years ago and he bought a ColecoVision with a couple of games dirt cheap. We played Zaxxon on it mainly until we got bored of it and it was put away in a cupboard until it got sold to someone as I recall.
Was a great fun console though.
Title: Re: The ColecoVision Thread
Post by: onthinice on January 30, 2013, 00:13:37 AM
The Colecovision really has some stand out games. Trouble with older consoles is that it always has to compete with newer and updated consoles. A number of the games look and play better on the Nintendo Nes like Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, Gyruss, Joust, Popeye and Q*Bert. Spy Hunter is still hard to beat on the Colecovision.

Are there more than two parts to the CGR video?

Donkey Kong usually gets mentioned most often when talking about the Colecovision, but these three games really should get more credit. Nice videos!

Outside of the 32X was Zaxxon ever ported to any of the other systems? I know we have talked about Mr. Do on the Super Nintendo. Now thinking about it, I wonder why Venture was not updated?

Zaxxon got lots of ports, see THIS THREAD! (//http)

Venture is one of those games that has sadly been forgotten though, shame because it was fun back in the day.

Mr. Do! is available for the Atari XL.  I've been trying to see if anyone who knows how to convert those to the 5200 could convert that version.  The XL version of Mr. Do! is fantastic and it would be great to play it on the console.  The ColecoVision version is also excellent.

I remember Zaxxon being on the computers and systems of the time. Checking the video again, it did not seem to make a splash on the later generation gaming systems. 32X is it until the compilation discs were released.

It'll be interesting to see how the new version of Zaxxon being developed for the SGM will be like compared to the original.  If it is anything like Donkey Kong Arcade, I think it'll blow it out of the water.

Now that the CV has the Super Game Module (something akin to the XM for the 7800), there are going to be a bunch of Super Games released for it.  This thing really upgrades the capabilities of the system.  Here are some sample games:

[align=center:26mvx89l]Donkey Kong Arcade

Donkey Kong Jr

Pengo

Looks like fans of the ColecoVision are in for several treats.  :)

Yes they do.  My understanding is that for some of these, like Donkey Kong, the actual arcade code is being reviewed to match the game to the arcade as much as possible.  Between the XM and the SGM retro gamers are going to be getting some truly fantastic games.  It'll be interesting to compare what both systems get!

I guess that would depend on whether they'd made a Flashback console with the capabilities of the SGM or not and if they can get the licenses for the games.

Yeah, maybe AtGames should contact the creators of the SGM and license SGM games for the next Colecovsion. Funny as Coleco licensed to Atari and Intellivision.

I quite like changing the games using the dip switches. It feels old school and it feels just like playing a single game.

I got to play a few games - Gyruss, Star Wars and Defender for the system. I had my Hauppauge HDPVR2 setup and recorded me hitting over 600000 on it. The game plays well if a little easy. The radar doesnt seemt to work and there is no high score but I really enjoyed the game.
