Fatal Smarties

I will always remember the early 90’s for the 16-bit console war between Nintendo’s SNES and Sega’s Mega Drive. Both consoles were great and each had their own exclusive titles. It is good to see that homebrew stuff is being created for these amazing machines and thanks to Matt Cope, Mike Tucker, Jon Davies and Mike Clark we have a cool shoot’em up called Fatal Smarties for the Mega Drive.

Fatal Smarties

Fatal Smarties is a two-player game only and sees you take control of two hillbilly heroes that have created their own flying machine called a flippercopter to fight the forces of evil. One of you must fly the contraption while the other takes control of the shooting. You get attacked by waves of monsters and the idea is to survive the attacks. Teamwork is the order of the day, as otherwise you will find yourself dying very early on in the game.

You can take a couple of hits, but you do only have one life so make it count. The game is difficult and you will find that you and a friend will be killed a lot. The game has an R-Type feel and if you are a big fan of SHUMPS, this one’s for you. There did appear to be a bug in the game, as I would find sometimes it would crash and I could not see anything on screen. Given the quirks it is still a fun and great looking shoot’em up, worthy of checking out.

A great little game that lead this team to make the awesome Xeno Crisis.
