Nintendo makes second consecutive annual loss as Wii U misses expectations.

Nintendo made an operating loss in 2012 for the second consecutive year as its new Wii U console failed to spark excitement among consumers. The company lost 36.4 billion yen ($366 million) over the 2012 fiscal year; last quarter, the company unexpectedly predicted that it would lose $220 million in 2012 after previously saying it would turn the same amount in profit. The Wii U has sold 3.45 million units worldwide to date, missing Nintendo's goal of 4 million units for the financial year — itself a lowered expectation after the company initially predicted it would sell 5.5 million systems. Three months ago, Nintendo announced worldwide Wii U sales of 3.06 million.

I really hope Nintendo can pull themselves out of this mess. I'm not the biggest Nintendo fan but they're still good for the industry. If you do the math they're selling just over a 100,000 units per month world wide which is absolutely terrible!

I know when the first video game crash was but when was the second?  :7:

The Very first one ( by all accounts) was the transition from table top, single task games like scramble and astro wars to consoles so I read in RG! the second one is prolly the first one in most peoples minds.

If anyone could have caused a second video game crash, it would have been Nintendo. Look at Wii and DS... same situation as in the early 80ies. Very popular systems, but Nintendo let them be flooded with shovelware, msses of it, and no quality control. It was hard to even find the real DS games on shelves between all the low budget crap that would have been a browser game on PC.

The crash did not happen.

The WiiU fails to meet expectations because it lacks software, and because its gimmick with the tablet is not an instant hit with the non-gamers like both touch screen and motion control were; it is not as attractive an innovation.

I don't see how that would cause a crash though. It just means that Nintendo will after one generation with a very successful home console be back to third place in that regard. Without the concept to fascinate the masses like motion control the WiiU is just an outdated console in light of coming, far superior systems.

Nintendo's primary focus should be the 3DS.

The console market will be vitalized by PS4 and Durango, and they will probably both outsell the WiiU. There won't be a system like the PS2 again with gigantic sales, as many have moved to mobile gaming etc, but the market will be healthy for a few years again. I am nut sure another generation of consoles will follow after that though.

Systems owned: Atari 2600, Lynx, Jaguar, NES, SNES, N64, GameBoy, Master System, Mega Drive, Dreamcast, Game Gear, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Xbox, Wonderswan

Ironic that the company that rescued video games from the first video game crash is now falling prey to its own crash.

The Crash was my assertion, as Apple and Sony are actively bringing innovations out, like Nintendo, but the new products seem to be dying on their asses, added to that Microsoft loosing market share to them at the same time makes for a less vibrant scene. Not a bad thin in my Opinion, its all got a bit silly.

Wow those figures make some really grim reading for Nintendo!

3.45 million units worldwide is shocking. Especially when you take into account the Atari 7800 sold 3.8 million units in North America alone.

Great post.

As for Apple, profits may be down but it's hardly the end of the world for them. They've gotten lazy in the past couple of years and the likes of Samsung have really got their act together. It's not beyond the realms of possibilty that Apple could wow the world with iPhone 6. If they don't then it'll have nothing to do with any industry crash due to market saturation. It'll have to do with the company having lost its way since Steve Jobs passed away.

As for Sony, PS Vita has been a commercial disaster of their own making. True, the market for dedicated handhelds may have shrunk in size due to the proliferation of iPhone and its clones, iPod touch and iPad and its clones but the success of the 3DS (30m units sold, afaik) goes to show plenty of people are willing to buy dedicated handhelds if the product is right.

Interesting. I wonder if they're laying off staff in marketing and trimming expenditure... at precisely the time they need to be spending more on marketing their struggling new console.
