So, old games are great. We can all agree on that, as many things as the lot of us around here disagree on. Here's a thing thing that we can all agree/disagree about While old games are great, sometimes you want to change them up to offer something new. There's been mods and hacks for all kinds of games over the years, so why don't we talk about them?

So, some of you might not be aware of the thriving Doom modding scene going on. Long after the game faded out of the public eye, hundreds of modders have made their own mods for Doom. As time went on, these got more and more advanced, as shown by this one right here: WildWeasel's Nazis.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tLw_c2VdPs

This mod doesn't change the levels themselves. What it does is replace all the weapons and enemies into something straight out of Wolfenstien, with period-accurate weaponry like Lugers and MP-40s, along with millions of Nazis to plug full of holes. On the technical side of things, you also have manual reloading, grenades to use against your foes, and weapon recoil to deal with, as well. It gives a pretty different experience compared to regular Doom, since both your weaponry and enemies are a little more grounded in reality, but it's still quite a lot of fun. You will, however, need the ZDoom engine to play, along with the .wad file from Doom or Doom 2.

And here's Dr. Robotnik's Creature Capture.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-OPlh-uu4U

There have been many, MANY Sonic hacks over the years, some of which are quite impressive, but none change the game quite as drastically as this. Instead of racing to the end of the level as Sonic, in this particular hack, you take control of Robotnik himself, trying to capture all the animals with a net to stuff them in an egg capsule before Sonic shows up. Grab it here!

Oh, those kind of mods  :P

There were some good Quake 2 ones. Lithium, which basically added powerups for speed/damage and stuff. There was also one called "Weapons of Destruction" I think. The streetsweeper was pretty ace.

I remember adding all sorts of different cars to Carmageddon too.

Other than that....not really sure. I did try several mods/hacks to try and make Mass Effect 2 playable.

There are loads of hacks for the Atari 2600 and 7800.

Wolfenstein is quite a cool one, a hack of venture to replicate the original 8-bit game.

The 2600 definitely has plenty.  Here is one that I really enjoy, Berzerk Voice Enhanced.

Now here's something interesting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q_8gxOxuIg

This is Samsara, a Doom mod where the gimmick is multiple characters. With Samsara, you get a bunch of the most "famous" FPS heroes. The Doom Guy, Duke Nukem, Quake Guy, BJ Blackowitz from Wolfenstien 3D, and a few other guys. They all get the same weapons they did in their original game, along with their own strenghts and weaknesses.

So, you can load up pretty much any Doom level, and play it in entirely new ways, depending on your character. It's a very polished effort, and if you enjoy Doom or early FPSes, get this.

Some great hacks here, I remember playing Unreal Tournament as Homer Simpson complete with some of his phrases to taunt with. I spent far too much time playing that and a lot of the map mods too, anyone still play UT?
