Tried 'Primal' on PS2, sigh.....

Here we go again, just like 'The Getaway', here's a game Sony clearly have thrown huge resources at (I could'nt fault the Getaway for it's ambition, it's high production values, hell it even has a Progressive Scan mode, but so much was broken on it, not least of all the targeting system, frustration killed any interest).

So again, huge production values ,16:9, 60 Hz, Progressive Scan options, streams extra assests off DVD for more Polygons than you'd find in a 'normal' PS2 game, professional voice acting etc etc), but what's the point of putting all these resources into a game, when the fundamentals are so poor?

The poor combat and basic puzzles just did'nt warrant further playing.

Really loved Sony Cambridges PSone Medievil 1+2, did'nt rate C-12, Final Resistance that much though.

I cannot fault their technical skills, but it's just overly sweet icing on a very poor cake.

Primal was a pity. Lovely visuals but crap combat and camera movement made me ill. Getaway also looks great but plays like a dog. It just needed simple twin stick control FFS!

Ghosthunter was ace though.

Played a bit more of The Getaway and the need for simple twin stick controls is the very least of it's problems.

Here we have Sony spending well over £3 Million on developing a game, that starts on PSone, ends up on PS2 and Sony promises will be a revolution, it's a step towards a future entertainment medium, it's a game that goes beyond the point that ANY video game has gone before.

What we get is:

A technically very impressive game but wandering around the realistic streets of London is fine, IF you know your way around, clearly an in-game mini-map is too much to ask for, as is a workable in-game camera, workable aut0-aim and a decent script!.

Your man character quite happy to slaughter all and sundary, just to get his kid back, friends, Police officers, both bent and straight, passers by etc.

No wonder B.T kicked up had it's logo's removed from the vans etc after 1 mission had you donning a BT uniform and breaking into a cop shop.Typical Sony arrogance not to think further than end of it's own nose.

It too has to feature an element of stealth into the game at some stage.

It really does (to me at least) sum up what was going so wrong with Sony at that time.

They were delivering technicaly fine games, not the leap over Dreamcast you'd expect for 3 Million Polys vs 66 Million, but for what they got out of the hardware, they could'nt be faulted, but they feel short on so many levels as games.

They were'nt getting closer to movies, no matter how much you spent on scripts or voice actors who did the music, they were'nt delivering the sort of gameplay you could'nt find anywhere else, they just had a huge amount of cash thrown at them, in the hope something would stick, they ended up being bloated, shallow and flawe experiences.

I'm finding it somewhat ironic that whilst i've put likes of Primal+The Getaway back on the shelf, i'm hooked playing a Sega game on PS2 which is a MD update, which was planned for the Dreamcast.

I played some Wii games today:

Boom Blox - Amazingly fun game that is probably one of the best uses of motion controls I have found yet. The best way I can describe it is Jenga on crack. Interestingly the concept for the game is by Steven Speilberg!

Jumper - This game is based on the movie of the same name and has some really interesting concepts that all work very well. The fighting is excellent and use of "jumping" works brilliantly, shame the camera is a bit crap though.

Lego Indiana Jones - I love the way this game looks and its quite fun to play. The puzzles are very logical and you have infinite lives so can try lots of crazy stuff. There is just a bit too much platforming going on for my liking!

Finished Transformers Fall Of Cybertron campaign last night, AMAZING GAME, the Transformers 1980's animated feature length film references flow thick and fast and are wonderfully done, it also manages to act like a modern retelling of "Arrival From Cybertron"'s first act/half

I completed this utterly amazing game today, great bit of stress relief after the bad footy result. I killed 9423 zombies on route to the finish and I have to say that last level was a total bitch. This is not only the first Wii game I have completed but the first modern game I have finished! If you have a Wii you really should own this game.

Spent a few hours with the Wii today.

First I played Sega Superstar Tennis, it's very nice with all the classic Sega themes and characters but I found it very hard to play.

Next up I had a go of Nights: Journey Of Dreams. Seen as I had heard pretty much only bad things about this game I was expecting the worse but once you get past the millions of annoying cut scenes it's great.

Last of all I put on Star Trek Conquest and before I knew it I had been played for 2 hours straight! I really love this and can see this really sucking up my time. I havn't enjoyed a strategy game as much as this in years, right p there with my favourite Wii games.

Played some Prototype 2 this afternoon, a really great fun, no-brainer of a game. Improving on the graphics and overall polish of the first game, whilst keeping the core gamplay elements that make it so much fun. Run up the side of buildings, rip opponents limb from limb or consume them to steal their identity and of course picking up cars and throwing them at helicopters  :111:

Really enjoying Ion Assault HD on PS3. Asteroids inspired twin stick shooter... old XBLA title that's been updated for a $2 PSN download. It also supports custom soundtracks so you don't have to listen to the lame in-game music.  :111:

I've been playing a lot of the PSN game Rainbow Moon lately. It's a strategy RPG and I'm loving it!

For the last couple of days I have been playing loads of GT Pro Series on the Wii.

I had heard this game was crap but saw it for £3 and took a chance on it as I love racing games, turns out it was a good punt. The cell shaded graphics look a bit shite but the gameplay is really solid, it's basically just Gran Turismo on the Wii. Well worth picking up.

Last night was GT5 night - brilliant. We have a championship which lasts for 10 weeks. Into our 6th one now.
