The homebrew scene is very strong especially for the ZX Spectrum. In 2015 there were some great games and I was fortunate to review some of them, which give me a nostalgic feeling of playing a new game on an 8-bit platform some 30 odd years after the Speccy was popular. The latest title is a platform game from Alessandro Grussu called Seto Taisho Vs Yokai.
As the title suggests you play the role of Seto Taisho, a monster who is made out of old cookware. The Crockery General as he is known has come back to Japan after being defeated by Funky Fungus (honestly I am not making these names up). However Seto finds out that the country is in turmoil as the Yokai – the monsters and goblins of Japan – has been brought to life by the same magic that is responsible for raising Taisho own army. Once you start playing the game becomes very addictive. Your only weapon is a jug-pointed spear that must be used to kill the Yokai present on the levels.
They are tricky to kill as there can be a few on the screen at any one time and they each have their own style which can be walking, chasing or bouncing. There are 3 levels each with 12 screens, so a lot has been crammed into a Spectrum game. I actually enjoyed Seto Taisho Vs Yokai and found it very enjoyable. The levels are well designed and have a feel of a game that could have been a full price title back in the day. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.
