BLIPTASTIC! by ComputeHer

While games have been the major force behind the rise of the retro scene over the last decade or so, one of the most interesting side-effects has been the resurgence of music created using the soundchips of the 8 and 16-bit eras. Combined with the explosion of digital self-publishing this has lead a number of artists and ex-demo scene members to be able to return to the formats of the '80s and '90s, creating some quite remarkable music using hardware which was previously considered only good enough to provide primitive bleeps and blips.

Michelle Sternberger has been at the frontline of the chiptune movement since the earliest days of this revival, both as part of the band 8 Bit Weapon and via her own solo project, ComputeHer. BLIPTASTIC! is ComputeHer's third full studio album and another solid demonstration of her talents.

Hints & Tips for Videogame Pioneers Book Review

Hints & Tips for Videogame Pioneers Book Review.

If you were a ZX Spectrum or Commodore 64 owner during the 1980s then chances are you'll not only remember Hewson Consultants fondly but that you'll also consider at least one of their games amongst your all-time favourites. Hewson wasn't the biggest software house around and they weren't the most prolific, but they were certainly one of the most consistent when it came to producing high-quality games for your 8-bit computer of choice.

Donkey Kong Arcade Machine – The Home Straight - Part 2

Part 2 – The Home Straight

You can’t get it wrong, there are no second chances. So here it is. A step by step guide to applying side art:

Donkey Kong Arcade Machine – Raising The Dead - Part 1

Part 1 – Raising The Dead

I can’t imagine what it must’ve been like to build arcade cabinets from the ground up on a factory production line back in the early 1980s. Rumour has it that those employed by Atari in California to hand build the classic cabs we know and love, were largely low-paid, permanently stoned hippies and Mexicans (am I allowed to say that?!).
