I think you've rounded off both lists quite nicely. It'd be difficult for me to distill the last 30-some years of gaming into just four mascots, but Mario, Sonic, and Pac-Man definitely need to be on that list for changing the landscape of video gaming forever. Somewhere in the list of most forgettable mascots would need to be Alex Kidd. Despite being heavily pushed by Sega in the late '80s, Alex Kidd possessed nowhere near the draw power of Mario and was relegated to obscurity once Sonic debuted on the Mega Drive. I don't think he's a particularly offensive character, mind you, just terribly plain. Later Alex Kidd games seem to suffer from an apparent lack of interest on the part of the developers, as at some point, it feels like Sega legitimately stopped caring.

I'm looking forward to seeing The Last Jedi. I've somehow managed to miss the last few Star Wars offerings at my local theater, so here's to hoping I'll make it to the cinemas this time. ;)

Not that I don't appreciate the Rock's passion for film making, but I have somewhat low expectations for the film. The game itself was obviously inspired by movies like King Kong and Godzilla and I believe the movie will have some difficulty making the concept seem original. I do like that they're drawing some emotional connection between the Rock and George. The Rock is always a strong lead actor and this type of movie is tailor-made for him. My worry is that Hollywood will ruin this film with the usual landscape of annoying CGI effects that accompany modern action movies. I'm definitely interested in the film, and it comes out on my wife's birthday, but I'll probably wait to hear more about it.

Great. Before I do that, I'm going to try to finish some more reviews and send them your way. I realize it's been almost two years since I've submitted any.  :o I opened up the Word document where I have them all saved and I found a number of stubs that never got finished. I guess now's as good a time as any to finish them.

You're not the only one!  We still have to do some work on them but they are back.  :)  I have actually written quite a few more reviews as I've been sending feedback to some podcasts and I can convert those for use here.

Do you guys need me to resubmit pictures for those games? I noticed that the screenshots for my reviews were offline. I still have the screenshots saved on my PC, so it wouldn't be much trouble to zip them up and send them your way if needed.

I may be in the minority as far as this forum is concerned. I love Final Fantasy VII. It was easily one of the most important games of my youth and shaped my expectations for years to come.

You can still buy the game even though you suspect you'll never finish it. ;) Most of the shoot-'em-up games I own will never be completed by me in my lifetime, but I do like to collect them. Games like Hellfire and Wings of Wor--forget about it! Now that I think about it, I realized I left out several Genesis/Mega Drive games that are quite difficult, like X-Men and Sub-Terrania, but neglected to mention in my post. I think it's just an expectation for any Genesis owner: Many of these games were based on the tried-and-true arcade formula of making the game difficult to keep the quarters flowing. If I get flattened by a mini-boss halfway through a level and have to start from the beginning, I hardly give it a second thought because I'm expecting it to happen anyway. As someone said earlier, repetition is the key to conquering these games. The more you play, the more you learn from your mistakes and it elevates your play.

Wow, this thread was before my time!  ;D Some of the most difficult games for me are the R-Type, Gradius, and Thunder Force style shoot-'em-ups. I liken the gameplay to being a running back in the NFL and trying to punch through the defensive line. Shoot-'em-ups, especially the "bullet hell" ones, like to set a wall of death in front of you and make you wriggle your way around it. Despite this, I love shoot-'em-up games for their simplicity of gameplay and the attractive, anime-inspired art styles. Of course, I've played the Contras, Castlevanias, Mega Mans, et al., and remember those games being very challenging as well.

On the RPG side of things, I do remember having some trouble with Phantasy Star II. One of the most annoying mechanics was that each party member would join your squad at level 1 regardless of how late in the game you acquired them. You'd always have to backtrack to get their level up to quota because some of the enemy encounters are absolutely brutal. Also, The 7th Saga for the SNES was fairly difficult in the sense that, at any given time, one unbalanced enemy encounter could almost guarantee death. There is a (somewhat infamous within the 7th Saga fan community) detailing this balancing issue where the player can't even survive one of the first random encounters in the game. Even if he spends a lot of money on potions, he barely has enough of them to offset the damage sustained from one battle. My experience with the game has been different--possibly because I picked a different starting character and I persevered till I was able to add another character to the party. But for that initial first third of the game where you have to fight solo, it's a grind. It was satisfying to beat.

Awesome! It's too bad I couldn't delay my trip to Portland this year till October. I went in April from my wife's commencement at her (online) university and enjoyed seeing the city for the short time we were there. I'll have to look through your album to see what I missed! Glad you enjoyed your stay.

The NES Classic is actually a smash retail hit, which is somewhat surprising. There was a lot of interest generated among longtime players and this is possibly the most success Nintendo has had with a home console (not handheld) release since the original Wii. Now, they're unveiling the Nintendo Switch, and let's hope that Nintendo continues their commitment to classic gaming by expanding their catalog of downloadable retro titles for the next generation of consoles.
