The History of the 3DO

The 3DO was one of the most hyped consoles of the 90s. It received a large amount of attention from the mainstream media, financial investors, and gamers alike. When released, it was considered an incredibly powerful and impressive system. So why did it have such a short run and why did the 3DO Company fail. In this video we're going to look at how the founder EA teamed with the co creators of the original Amiga computer and Atari lynx to create one of the most anticipated pieces of gaming hardware from the 90s… only to see it fail to capture the market that seemed to covet it.

I liked the idea of the 3DO, selling different models etc, but pushing it with high specs pushed the price at launch way too high, this coupled with the 16-bit market only halfway through its cycle meant any machine that launch in the west 93-94 stood no chance of selling in big enough numbers to survive.

When the 3DO was new, I wanted to buy one for Madden Football and Space Hulk. Picked one up in the late 1990's when the systems were being discounted. I have discovered a lot of great games since but never bought either of those two titles.

How come you never got those titles? Are they too expensive?

Not sure. Probably a lack of interest over time. I do not think price was ever a factor. Maybe lack of spending money at times. lol.
Madden Football has seen so many updates and better consoles to play the game. Personal preference is Madden 94 on the Sega Genesis.
Space Hulk held my interest at the time for being part of the Warhammer universe. Reviews always seemed mixed. Most agreed it was a tough game to learn to play.
If there was a third reason it was competing systems. At the time, used video game trade & sell stores were flourishing in my area. Lots of choices.

One of my favourite systems, easily top five. It wasn't perfect and there were a lot of things that lead to it's failure but I'll never stop playing it.

In the end, that's what matters.

Think I need to dig mine out next year and give it some attention.
