In 1981 Exidy introduced the world to their version of an adventure game called Venture.  The goal of the game is to control a character called Winky as he explores dungeons and collects treasures while avoiding enemies.  The game was ported to several consoles and it is still being ported today by homebrew programmers.  So, how does the arcade compare to the home ports?  Let's find out...

I always liked Venture but found the 2600 to be far too easy and a big on the ugly side, the ColecoVision port is fantastic however. The Intellivision seems to be somewhere in between.

They missed off the A8 version, I am guessing because it only just came out.

TrekMD

Yes, I'm guessing the A8 version got unnoticed because it is fairly recent.  There's also the 5200 version in development.  Interesting that none of the home ports have the zoom in, zoom out effect of the arcade.  You'd think the Windows port would have that effect.  In all honestly, I had completely forgotten about it!

Yeah I noticed that to, maybe somebody should convert this to the Lynx!

That'd be nice!

Just found out about another conversion of this game that isn't in the video, the one for the TRS-80 computer:

For those interested there is also an interview with the creator of Venture, Howell Ivy, in the latest Retro Gamer magazine. What's more is they asked him my question and printed it too <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gif" alt=":)" title="Smiley" />

Interesting attempt for the game on the TRS-80.

Nice job on your question being used. 8)

That's cool that it was ported to the TRS-80.  How complete is the game compared to the arcade?

No idea I just found a mention of it and then found that screenshot on another site talking about TRS-80 arcade ports. It seemed to suggest it was pretty decent as far as the system and its limited abilities is concerned.

I like Venture, but often wish Exidy or some company thereafter had offered a sequel, preferably one with new and more levels. Just two levels got too easy too fast in every version I played.

Here is a newer video looking at various versions of Venture...
