Super Hero Games

So in the last year we have seen loads of new super hero films including X-Men, Avengers, Thor, Green Lantern, Captain America, Batman, Spiderman and a new Superman is just around the corner too.

What are your favourite super hero games?

I have Captain America, Batman, and Spider-Man for Android.  They are fun games but I think Captain America is my favorite of the three.

Spiderman Vs. The Kingpin

This is an excellent arcade adventure with strong beat 'em up elements that is far better than the Spiderman games released for the normal Mega Drive. The cut scenes are extremely cheesy but they do help tell the story and look excellent. The in game visuals are also really nice too, especially the animation. As it's on CD we are treated to some nice generic rock music while we play. If you own a Mega CD owner then this is a game you should most certainly have in your collection, especially if you are a Spiderman fan!

Batman Returns

This is one of the few Mega CD games out there that truly take advantage of the scaling hardware for its awesome driving sections. The platform sections are taken straight from the cart game and are as dull as dish water but thankfully you can choose to play just the brilliant driving levels! The graphics are just wonderful as you fly down the roads at break neck speeds taking out the criminals and defating the bosses. Batman Returns is without doubt one of the best reasons to own the Mega CD add-on.

I absolutely loved this classic, the music was perfectly reproduced and for the first time, you could beat the shite out of the bad guy and really get the sense you where the man of steel highly recommend this.

Most of my favorite super hero games are on modern consoles but if we're doing retro then I have to agree with onthinice, Spiderman on the Dreamcast is an awesome game.

I am afraid the best Super Hero game is Batman Arkham City on the current gen.. Before that i rarely played them on retro consoles.

For me, I'd have to say Marvel Super Heroes. This game never was as popular before they started adding in the tag team elements and Capcom characters, although maybe tha'tll change with that rerelease they did.

This is one of my favorite fighting games ever, I'd have to say. It's fast, it's crazy, some fantastic animation, great presentation. I can't say enough good things about this game. Sure, Marvel VS Capcom was great and all, but in some ways, I still think I prefer this.

Sadly, however, DC never ended up getting a fighting game this good. Justice League Task Force was a weak SF2 clone, and Mortal Kombat VS DCU had... issues. Hopefully Injustice: Gods Among Us will be good when that comes out, at least.

It looks really crude these days but I think it's still pretty fun to play. I know that I enjoyed it a lot back in the day despite not being a massive Spiderman fan.

Another pretty good Spiderman game that I remember playing was the Game Boy version. I think my brother borrowed it off somebody as I remember playing quite a lot over one weekend.

Played sooo many over the years, earliest i can recal:

Spiderman 2600, web swinging, bomb defusing fun, Scot Adams text adventures:The Hulk and Human Torch i think.

Batman:Caped Crusader was suerb on C64, Special FX really nailed the comic panel look and a superb mix of fisty cuffs and detective work.Batman The Movie was fantastic on C64+ST.

Loved MD Spiderman, The X-Men games, although as always, bit miffed to see your super powers toned down, Spidey getting beaten up by rats!!, 3D sections as Lair mentioned, bloody amazing on MCD, really wish so much more was done with the hardware like this.

Then there was PS1 Spiderman, The GTA/Open World Spiderman games on PS2/Xbox, Hulk:Ult.Destruction, Wolverine (Xbox), just picked up Batman:Rise Of Sin Tzu on Xbox.

Did enjoy X-Men:legends on Xbox, but soon tired of Marvel:Ult.Alliance on PS3.

MK VS DC Universe never did much for me either.


Tried 360 Crackdown 1+2, but so far, only series that's really made me feel like a superhero, has been Infamous on PS3, 1st was'nt bad, Infamous 2 was superb as was the Halloween DLC, Festival Of Blood.

I really liked Batman: Caped Crusader on the Commodore 64 but besides that have never been a lover of Superhero games as generally they left me cold.
I did quite like Danger Mouse on the Amiga though, does that count?

I also remember Spiderman on the Atari 2600, and it's still a cute little game.  Laird also points out the first Spidey title on the Gameboy which I bought back in '91, a nine level action adventure with wall crawling stages not dissimilar to the 2600 game ten years before. Like so many licenced GB fodder, it's best summed up as professional but derivative. Decent fun at the time when I wasn't bored to death by that type of thing.

The best game I've played involving a superhero would have to be Batman on the ZX Spectrum, a hugely atmospheric isometric adventure from 1986.

Two other fine Batman games appeared on the 8-bit formats: Batman The Caped Crusader (1988) and the Michael Keaton movie licence Batman (1989), but the John Ritman original goes deeper.
