I have always found isometric games to be very hit and miss, some I love but there are many that people seem to love that I have just never got on with like Head Over Heels and Knightlore.

So what are your favourite isometric games?

Here are probably the very first 2 I played, both excellent games:

Crystal Castles (1983 Atari) [Re-Uploaded]

Zaxxon arcade game (69,450)

TrekMD

Both very good choices.  Those are two that are excellent choices.  Clearly, Crystal Castles is one of my favorites.  One isometric game that I have always liked, clearly inspired by Zaxxon, is Desert Falcon.  Given there's no Zaxxon for the 7800 (we need someone to make it!), this is the closest thing to it for the system.

Agreed, Desert Falcon on the 7800 is an excellent game and a great example of what the machine can do.

It was released on the 2600 and XL/XE too but those versions are not as good:

It's amazing they even tried it on the 2600!  This must be one of the few isometric games on the system.  One other isometric game for the system that I am aware of is Congo Bongo.

But it can't really match the arcade.  Now Congo Bongo was one of those isometric games that was not as well received as something like Zaxxon.

Always fancied Viewpoint on the NeoGeo but so far I've only managed to play the PS1 version.

Here's a video of Viewpoint on the Neo Geo...

Kinda looks an like isometric Xevious.

Mire Mare

I've always enjoyed playing Up 'n' Down both on my c64 and in the arcade.

My favourite isometric games have to be The Last Ninja games. Gorgeous and epic in equal measure.

TrekMD

I completely forgot about Up'N'Down.  That was ported to several home systems too.

1st 2 were outstanding, 3rd graphically and sonically superb, but gameplay felt weakest of the 3 for me.

Had soft spot for Head Over Heels C64, Chimera A8, will think of few others i'm sure.

Rogue Trooper

Ahh the wonders of tea...

Hopefully these count as poured hours into them all:

Blue Max A8

The Immortal MD (how the hell i completed it i'll never know)

Syndicate Jaguar

Vendetta C64

Panther C64

Xcom Playstation

Fallout 1+2 PC

Amaurote A8 (sadly never played, but looks superb, lush detail etc.C64 version looks totally different and worse for it).

TrekMD

One that I recently discovered and that I enjoy is Isolated Warrior on the NES.

DreamcastRIP

The Great Escape (Speccy) by Ocean was an isometric game I played for many hours back in the day. Fully deserving of the rave reviews it garnered in the likes of Crash, imo.

Speccy handled this genre really, really well. Was i jealous of Speccy Batman, Where Time Stood Still as a C64 owner? damn straight.

Good friend of mine at the time had Great Escape on C64-knew game inside out.Think 1st home micro game that'd see a whole group of us just sat around watching him play.

8 Bit game seemed far, far superior to the PS2 game i last saw served up.
