Title: First time custom paint job advice.
Post by: stonemonkeylives on March 11, 2015, 14:14:20 PM
Hi, firstly if this has been asked already I apologise.

I recently came into the possesion of 5 faulty PS1 consoles and after cleaning them and getting them working again I decided to have a go of customizing one or two of them. Only problem is I have never done anything like this before and have absolutely no idea where to start.

I have had look on the interweb and the MeTube for help but all I seem to find is "how to custom paint you ps4 controller" crap. And after about an hour and half of watching the useless videos I found, I decided it was time to come and ask you guys.

I know I need to sand and prime the console before spraying it, and that when spraying it, it needs to have multiple light even coatings. But where really stuck is being able to keep or replace the logos and button labels. Would it be best to make a stencil of the fonts and spray them on again or should I use something else to put them on the sprayed console? If I am to use something else, what would you recommend? Are there any tutorial write ups or videos you could point me to?

I would like emphasize at this point; that this is just for personal benefit, I don't plan on selling these console but I would like to be able to customise a console if I can......maily because I'm a cheapskate. [emoji16]

Thank you for any and all advice or help you guys can give me.

Jeremy

Retromod will hopefully give you some advice but I know others have dabble in customising. I guess you need to decide how you want the finished console to look and then work on how you achieve that. Can you get access to a decent 3D printer?

Unfortunately not, I don't plan on doing anything too extravagant to start with. I was thinking of painting it matt black and having the Sony logo and the power/open/reset symbols in white.

I want to try and keep the style pretty much the same as I do like the look of the original PS1. I just don't how I can do the logo and symbols after spraying the case.

have a look to the model making shops. There are plenty of possible solutions as the task to perform is nothing else than adding a logo to a painted tank, train or airplane. But as usual you have more possiblities and it depends on your knowledge.

For example one way is to orientate on model making by using decals. the other way is to paint it and prepare the console to keep the original one. Or you clever alter the design to exclude it from painting etc.
