Title: Sega Mega CD Must Have Games
Post by: TL on March 16, 2012, 17:38:13 PM
I think it's fair to say that there are a lot of really crappy games for the Mega CD add-on but here are my 10 favourite ones, please add your own!

Silpheed - A simply wonderful shoot 'em up that uses a mix of 3D polygons, FMV and 2D sprites to portray the action. Many compared it to Starfox at the time but thats totally unfair as much better and more of a traditional shooter.

Final Fight CD - The best retro conversion of the Capcom arcade game out there. Not only is it almost arcade perfect but you have CD sound and a brand new battle mode to play too. Pisses all over the crappy SNES version.

Jaguar XJ220 - Brought to us by Core Design and based on the best selling Lotus games this is a great one or  two player driving game (in split screen) with a full career mode and some fantastic graphics and sound.

Sensible Soccer - Ok its just an upgraded version of the cart release but as well as some pointless FMV it allows you to edit much more of the data (as long as you have memory) and the best "hitting the post" sound you will ever hear.

Sonic CD - I am not generally a fan of platformers but there is no doubting that this is a great game with a superb soundtrack too. I think this is definately the most over looked game in the blue hedgehog's library.

Robo Aleste - The Aleste series has long been a favourite among shoot 'em up fans and this is another great example why. Vertically scrolling action of the highest order that uses some great scaling and rotation effects.

Batman Returns - Forget about the tedious and lacklustre platform stages from the cart release, this is all about the awesome driving stages. One of the few games out there that really shows the power of the system.

Soul Star - Core Design's output for the Mega CD is nothing short of superb and they really were the only publisher to prove consistantly what the add-on can do. Soul Star is a brilliant 3D style shooter that everyone should own.

Amazing Spiderman Vs. The Kingpin - A massive arcade adventure / beat 'em up that is one of the most overlooked games in the systems library. Really captures the style and look of the comic books perfectly.

Thunderhawk - Another title from Core Design and the one first one they released that really pushed the system. A brilliant 3D style helicopter combat game with non-stop action that shits all over SNES mode 7 graphics.

I would have to probably say, besides the obvious choice of Sonic CD, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side. (CDS? Do you get it? Do you?]

Is it a really good fighting game? No, not... really... but is it worth playing? Yes, I'd say it would. It's full of so much insanity, along with a few decent ideas, that it's definately worth getting just for the two player alone. This is a game where a US senator can turn a cyborg upside down with his telekenetic powers, shake the money out of him, and throw him to the ground. From there, a cannon launches a clown car on top of him, which causes a huge, bloody mess.

Basically, you should play this game.

Eternal Champions got my attention thanks to the awesome characters and fatalities, but as a flat out fighting game its not that great... I Personally don't like fighting games form the early 90's that tried to come across as elite when all they were was unnecessarily hard.

For the Mega CD my top ten is pretty tough, I don't know which order they should go in exactly but these games all make the list

Earthworm Jim Special Edition
Battlecorps
Soul Star
Sol Feace
Supreme Warrior
Surgical Stike
Wolf Child
Road Avenger
Terminator
Novastorm

I need to look into some of the titles you guys have mentioned that I haven't heard of... thanks for the suggestions!!

EDIT: Shit that Android Assault looks pant wettingly good! Will it work on PAL systems??

Sadly not :(

You would need to change the BIOS chip or get one of the very expensive CDX cartridges that let you play NTSC games.

There are a load of import games I would love to get for my Mega CD - especially Ninja Warriors!

I was a massive fan of the triple screen arcade game and also had the Spectrum version which I enjoyed, this Mega CD version looks epic though. The soundtrack for this game is also absolutely superb. I still can't understand why Taito didn't release games like this in the west.

It gets better as it goes on, a classic old school beat 'em up.
