Title: Light Gun Games
Post by: TL on December 11, 2013, 21:40:59 PM
I have always loved light gun games but now we no longer use CRT TVs in our living rooms the one that require this technology are quickly getting forgotten and unplayed. I was playing a few last weekend at Revival and I thought it would make a good discussion. I also found this video that puts the Master System light phaser up against the NES Zapper:

Gamesack. I love that show. As for Lightgun games, I dont know why they are not as popular. At least if you have a Wii you can still play some.

Its obvious it can still be done, just look at Time crisis on the PS4.

Yes, it is unfortunate that lightgun games can no longer be played with modern TV's.  The ones I have enjoyable and that's why I still have a CRT here in the house!

Agreed, the Wii has some great ones. Especially this:

Ghost Squad is another one looking out for - and the Res Evil Chronicles games.

There also Dead Space Extraction and even the Link Crossbow trainer game is worth a go as it has some really nice score attack modes.

I liked HOTD2 on DC but HOTD2&3 on Wii is just more convenient.

Virtua Cop 1 & 2 and Mighty Hits on Saturn are great too.

I was just thinking someone should come up with something like this!
Also with all these adapters they make these days that allow you to use PS2 controllers on older consoles, I wonder if this would work with one of them? It would be pretty cool if you could play the old 8 and 16 bit gun games on a HDTV!

A Saturn version would be excellent - mainly for Virtua Cop 1 & 2 - but maybe PS2 got a release of that game?

The Atari 7800 has some of my favourite light gun games, a really nice selection of different game types and the gun looks incredibly cool, which is a bonus:

[align=center:35oek5ks]Quick Clips - Atari 7800 - 008 - Crossbow (http://http)

Meltdown 7800 (http://http)

Alien Brigade (atari 7800) - gameplay (http://http)[/align:35oek5ks]

All 3 games are great, but my particular favourite is Crossbow. I have great memories of playing it on holiday when I was a kid and it was also one of the first 2600 games I played. I have always adored the game and the 7800 version is the best. I also think that Meltdown is a really under rated game, it might not look like much but the gameplay is superb, it can get really frantic.

Sentinel is also pretty good too, if a bit strange, but I couldn't find a video of that on the 7800.

This reminds me I need to get some more games for my Master System Phaser and Megadrive Menacer. I had the Phaser years ago and loved playing gun based games but all I have for it now is the 3 in 1 (Marksman, Safari hunt and trap shooting) and operation wolf which I haven't played for a while.
The link to the LCD Topgun is fantastic, may have to invest in one for the MAME cabinet.

Hmm, maybe I need to check out those as well now that I have a Genesis.  Will the Menacer work with LCD TV's?

Nope, you will need a CRT.

The Master System gun is great, there are some really good agmes for it. There is even one that uses the light gun and the 3D glasses!

Some of the Master System light gun games, Operation Wolf is probably the best home version of the game and both Gangster Town and Missile Defence 3D are good fun too.

I have to find these guns at a decent price.  There was one on ebay with 6 games but it was snatched in no time.  It sold for $30!  All the other ones (with no games) sell for $90 or more!

Wow! They are a lot cheaper over here, but I guess SMS stuff is far more common in Europe.

Well, the system was more successful there so that does not come as a surprise.  I'll have to take my time.

The version of MadDog that I played was not a Light Gun version but it certainly makes sense for the game to be of this type!

Does anyone know is the SMS phaser pistol works with the Atari 7800 console? I couldn't spend the cash to get a genuine 7800/XE gun, so bought a clone that Best Electronics sells instead. The trouble with it is that it is off on its aim. You have to point to the side of the sprite you are aiming for in order to score a hit.

No it doesn't. Only the Best gun or the real one. I actually have a spare XG-1 on eBay right now, I have seen them go for 60!

Yep, I have wanted that light gun because of all the good things I have heard about it. I have an Atari 400 so that is why I have not bought an XE yet. Sounds like you did well on selling your 800XL. Thanks for the information about the Atari Max flash cartridge.

I have a lightgun for PS1, too. Sadly to say that these are not working anymore on non-tube tv sets. Same problem for lightpens. If someone has a workaround or solution to make them playable on modern tv sets - let me know.

Somebody posted something about this a while ago but I don't remember what thread it was in. I think it was a Wii style sensor bar that you could plug PS1 and 2 light guns into and use on a LCD TV. Maybe somebody else knows where it is, sounded pretty cool anyway.
