Title: Hardest games you've played
Post by: Vyothric on February 03, 2013, 03:53:05 AM
Haven't completed:

Alien Storm (Mega Drive) - I've got really close to finishing this, but I keep dying in almost the exact same spot right before the end boss every time. Just feel I've reached my limit with this one.
Batman Returns (SNES) - With the exception of Streets of Rage I almost always find beat 'em ups annoying & awkward.
Batman Returns (Mega Drive) - Different game, but stupidly hard.
Die Hard Trilogy (PS1/Saturn) - I tried both versions but DH3 (the driving part) is impossible on both.
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (NES) - You might know this from the AVGN videos. I just don't see how it's do-able.
Ecco: The Tides of Time (Mega Drive/Mega CD) - Maybe I was just bored/frustrated after the first one, but I didn't get very far on this.
Final Fight CD (Mega CD) - It's just hard.
Rick Dangerous 2 (Amiga) - I managed to get quite far in the game but you have to memorise everything perfectly.
Super Mario Kart (SNES) - Cheating AI.
The Adventures of Batman & Robin (Mega Drive) - Can't even get past the first stage.
The Adventures of Batman & Robin (SNES) - Different game and yet also can't get past the first stage.
X-Men (Mega Drive)
X-Men 2: Clone Wars (Mega Drive - One of the best X-Men games I've played. Really difficult, but seems like it might be do-able (at least compared to some of the other games on this list).

That I have actually completed:

Alisia Dragoon (Mega Drive) - Gets very tricky near the end and I got stuck on it for a long time. It's a very cool game though.
Captain Claw (PC) - One of the hardest platformers I've played. It's one of those games that just keeps getting harder and harder and harder. There's no break from it at all. Relentless.
Castlevania: Bloodlines (Mega Drive) -  At the end you have to go through 3 screens (one of which has flying Medusa heads) then beat 3 previous bosses, then beat Death, then beat another boss.....then you get to Dracula who has 3 different forms to beat.
Castlevania: Dracula X (SNES) - Constantly getting knocked off platforms. Harder than SCIV.
Descent 1 & 2 (PC) - Cheap bosses that spam you with instant-kill missiles.
Ecco the Dolphin (Mega Drive/Mega CD) - The last 3 levels are ridiculous. "The Tube" is hard enough, but then you get to "The Machine". This is a level where the screen is constantly moving back, forth, up & down and you have to pick the right path every time or you're dead. There are enemies constantly coming at you too. This lasts for about 5 minutes, maybe more. You have to do this AND the last boss without dying. There's no password for the last boss so if you die you have to do the whole thing again.
Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Mega Drive) - One of the easier games in the series, but still pretty challenging.
Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES) - What makes this so much harder than Ghouls 'n Ghosts is that there is no boss checkpoint. If you die at a boss you have to start from the previous checkpoint. Also the controls are just so stiff and unresponsive you just can't make the character move the way you want it to.
Hagane (SNES) - Pretty difficult over-all and you have to kill the end boss while climbing platforms at the same time.
Journey to Silius (NES) - This one is a lot like Alisia Dragoon in a way. Difficult, but you actually want to keep playing it. One of my favourites from these lists.
Kolibri (32x) - This game is just awkward. Really, really awkward.
Mega Turrican (Mega Drive) - Not the hardest Turrican, but pretty close.
Ninja Gaiden (NES) - Memorisation only gets you so far. The precision needed and constant re-spawning make this really difficult.
Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos (NES) - see above
Shadow Dancer (Mega Drive) - You just have to be so precise all the time.
Revenge of Shinobi (Mega Drive) - That stupid dodgy double-jump gets me every time.
Silver Surfer (NES) As hard as this is, I was a little surprised at how hard some people said it was (I found Ghosts 'n Goblins way harder). I'm not even very good at shoot 'em ups.
Shinobi 3 (Mega Drive) - Much the same problem as Revenge of Shinobi.
Super Castlevania IV (SNES) - Easier than Dracula X, which is easier than Bloodlines. But still pretty hard.
The Adventures of Lomax (PS1) The start of this game is great. But after a while the difficulty is almost unbearable.
Turrican 2 (Amiga) - Took me several tries just to get past the first level.
Wing Commander (PC) - Mainly because I was trying not to get people killed near the end. But it's an annoying game anyway.

So......what are the most difficult games you've played?

I have to agree about the Ecco games and Revenge of Shinobi. I have completed Final Fight with a friend. That probably does not count though.

The MD Shinobi games and the Turrican games are rock hard, definitely agree with that.

Smash T.V. and Total Carnage are worthy of a mention.

Oh and Ninja Gaiden 3 on the Lynx (same game as NES) where if you die you go back to the start  >:(

Batman Returns on the Lynx is not an easy game.

Laser Blast on the Atari 2600. Playing last fall and finally gave up trying for a million.

I second Ghosts'n Goblins on any platform, and its sequel.

Also I find Darius on PC Engine to be insanely hard, never played another version.

Battlesphere on the Jaguar is crazy hard too.

A new game that gets frustratingly hard is Amy by the creator of Flashback; at first I was very positive about the game, it has high production values for a DLC game... but the last chapter is such a bad case of trial and error it kills all fun. So much that the game was panned by critics and ultimately reduced to about 1 Euro on the PSN Store, that's lower than most stuff yo can get there.

Another one from me:

Hellfire on the Mega Drive, I can't even get past the first level  :o

Another +1 for Ghosts n Goblins.

Not sure how far I can get on Hellfire but I definitely can't finish it.

Only 2 game have really been unbeatable for me.
One is Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox 360 and the other Syndicate Wars on the PS1...that last level  (http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/banghead.gif)

Castlevania's downgraded to the completed list. Added Rick Dangerous 2 which I forgot about (I'm sure the first is hard too, but I haven't played it much).

Bad Company on the ST. I urge anyone with an ST or emulator to grab this game and play it then get back to me!

Image Fight on the PC Engine is ridiculous. I would be frightened to meet anyone who said they completed it.

Technician Ted on the spectrum (1984) was designed so it could not be completed. All I can say to the designers is...congratulations!!

I don't actually remember that game being that hard but I certainly never finished it.

Zero 5 on the Jaguar is another very hard game.

Agree with Ninja Gaiden on Xbox 360. I found this utterly unenjoyable to play as the difficulty ramped up not too far into the game.  I felt neither the inclination or desire to play it after that.

I'm sure this one isn't that hard but I've been playing it most nights during this month, but I cannot, yet, get to the end of Rush 'n' Attack on the XBLA!

Final game ill mention now, also on XBLA, is fraking Spelunky!! Aaaargh! Damned annoying little game.

The 2600 and 7800 versions of Double Dragon are bloody difficult, especially compared to the super easy versions on other systems.

I never found these versions of DD to bee that difficult.  A game that I do find difficult is Rolling Thunder, though.  I have the ports for the NES and the PSP and both are difficult to play.  The PSP version is even harder!

I have lots of systems and games, but two NES titles immediately come to mind:

Ghosts and Goblins
Castlevania

Both are maddeningly difficult and make you want to fling them through a window.

- Tombi (PSone) cute but extremely hard
- Space INvaders Extreme (PSP) could pass thourgh the 3rd level

Dark and Demon's Souls PS3-Tough but very rewarding and look on my mates face when he saw i'd finished it and he'd given up, priceless, plus his kids were in awe of me, lol.

Iron Solider 3 PS1, just seems unfairly pitched.

Cannon Fodder Jaguar-my slow moving troops wading through water, being shot by RPG's from guys off-screen, not fair :-(

Ninja Gaiden Xbox-punishing bitch, but i came to love her.

Crimson Sea Xbox-Invisible alien level did my swede right in.

Blue Stinger DC swimming section just bloody awful, gave up.

Tomb raider PS1 Awful, awful controls.

Metriod prime GC, so i'm locked on, gun powered up, waiting to fire, BAM! hit by electro bolt, put hand in front of face, lock-on etc lost.

Dropship PS2 and apache A.A PS3 fer fecks sake it's just me VS every damn thing in creation, i loathe this escort/protect missions.

G'N'G PSP strewth!!!!!

MDK 2 DC Bloody hell! had to download a saved game to VMU to get anywhere, ditto with DC Ecco.

Monty On The Run C64.Going back to it now, man i must have had ninja pixel perfect platforming skills as a youth, sadly lost now.

Darksiders PS3-gave up on 1st boss due to horrendous control scheme for lock-on/special attacks.

God Of War 1+2 PS2/PS, i'm crap at QTE's, add in PS Dual shock dead zone issues and disaster unfolds.

Dunno about Darksiders being 'easy' i just found it an utter ball-ache to play, in terms of boss fights. It was 1st fight on earth, you vs Dargon type lass, controls were awful and each time you died, which i did often, you had to trek back, sit through unskippable cut scene shit, listen to same old speech, only to die, rinse and repeat.Though F-this.Gave game away to a mate.

Ninja Gaiden II however, i sailed through and completed. Each to their own.

I had the exact same experience with Darksiders so you're not alone RT.
The game was fairly easy up to that point but I got pissed off at that same boss and turned it off and never played the game again. It didn't help that the game was a huge Zelda ripoff and I have gotten bored with every Zelda game I ever played and never finished one of them.

:-) Glad it was'nt just me.I found the 'difficulty' to be finding the desire to continue playing the game past the point i got stuck.75% of the time i'll leave a game, for months, hell even years and return to it, this however? interest killed stone dead.I was told it was like a modern day Soul Reaver game, so hopes were high, but nope, fell at 2nd hurdle for myself and killed any interest in the sequel.

Thing is today? i'm not exactly going hungry for games, got pile of shame on so many formats, if game kills interest off early on? it be f*cked.why would i want to spend time struggling to get past an early stumbling block, if they could'nt even sort the basics out?.Just was'nt going to happen.

Yeah that's how I'm starting to look at games these days too. So many games I want to play and there just isn't enough time. If I find I'm not really enjoying a game what's the point in playing more? Might as well move on to another game in the pile.

Most recent case in point for myself:

Mate at work lent me:Sniper Ghost warrior II on 360, just as he had the previous game, i don't care if it is powered by Cry Engine III, it's awful, been deleted from my HDD, going back to him in the morning and i'm moving on.....

Are most of these modern games really 'hard' or is it just frustration over poor controls, poor camera, poor storyline, etc... just not fun. My first thought for a difficult modern game was the final boss of Shadows of the Damned, but the difficulty was caused by a randomly reversing camera/controls and repeatedly having to restart from the last checkpoint. Took several tries but it didn't require any great skill to finish the game.

I think older games like GnG, Spelunker, Ikaruga are truly 'hard' because the difficulty is overcome by practice, memorization, and skill.

Ahh, but is a memory test really a test of the players 'skill'? If you know exactly when and where a bad guy is going to spawn, or pattern a boss takes in it's attack, are your reflexes etc being fully tested?.

I recal C64 Delta being quite hard, until you learnt the attack waves and from there on in, game eased up greatly, having things in games like no power up's respawn if you die on a boss or entering a fight with few slivers of health left, now that i'd say was a challenge.

So, i throw question out there:How do we, as gamers 'define' hard?.
Title: Re: Hardest games you've played
Post by: Vyothric on June 18, 2013, 19:31:14 PM
Well there are few categories I suppose.

Games like shoot 'em ups always have unrealistic expectations of a humans reaction time (or mine at least).

Memorisation - certainly it can make a game easier once you've learned the patters of everything, but again...being human simply knowing how to do something doesn't mean I'll be able to do it perfectly every time. Or even well. It's just not that simple.

Games like the Shinobi series rely heavily on memorisation but I've never thought of one as being easy. They're among the hardest games I've completed.

For me, the only easy games are ones that only require skill. That is, once you've learned the mechanics of the game you're pretty much set. FPS & driving games often fall into this category.

(This made sense when I typed it, but it might not)
Title: Re: Hardest games you've played
Post by: tomwaits on June 18, 2013, 19:53:22 PM
Even games with fixed enemies require more than just memorization... you need to be pretty precise on the controls to 1cc R-Type. And it takes a lot of practice... I'd say R-Type is a 'hard' game and a 1cc run is 'skill' even if you've memorized where every enemy is going to appear.

For me, hard games require an excessive combination of reflexes, precision, and memorization/pattern recognition. Or at least two of the three. Most of the retro games mentioned in this thread would probably qualify but games like Final Fantasy, Darksiders, or Shadows of the Damned are just frustrating and can easily be beaten with persistence instead of skill.

Post by: Havantgottaclue on June 18, 2013, 19:59:26 PM
If we're talking modern games, I'd say Catherine warrants a mention. There is an issue with the camera controls, as it's very difficult to see what you're doing when Vincent, your character, is climbing around the back of the blocks. You are under constant time pressure too - it's a hard, hard game.

Another one I was playing the other night which is very tricky is Dodonpachi Resurrection - certainly after playing Mushihimesama Futari it feels like something of a step up in terms of difficulty.

I've seen Darksiders 2 get a mention - I must admit I've not completed it, but I think my play time is pushing the 20 hour mark (I'd have to go in game to find out) so I reckon I am fairly close to the end. But the only real challenge is the bosses, and these are typical modern-day bosses that just require you to work out the method. Once you've worked out the way it's done, it's usually not too hard to implement.

Shadows of the Damned? I must admit I found the controls rather treacly. I am probably about half-way through that one. I wouldn't say it's excessively difficult, just a bit clunky.

As far as older games are concerned, I was a little surprised to see Turrican 2 mentioned earlier in the thread. I completed the C64 version of that in a weekend, albeit of more-or-less non-stop play. It could be difficult but there were lots of extra lives dotted around, and if you made a point of exploring around you'd very soon find yourself with 7 or 8 lives to spare. I completed the Amiga version too, and that's at a time where I barely completed anything - and seldom did I even expect to!

Project X was a game of notorious difficulty, but I have to say I didn't find it that bad - I generally expect shoot-'em-ups to present a challenge, and I'm not sure Project X was that different to whatever else was around.

Another entire genre that tended to be fiendishly difficult was single-screen platformers of the Manic Miner mould. Of course there's the famously unforgiving Technician Ted, which I've never played, but also rather infamous in the C64 world was the duo of Hercules and Gods&Heroes. These were visually very basic but apparently sadistic and addictive in equal measures. I must admit I've only ever briefly tried them. I never had much patience with games such as those ...

Excelelnt question what makes a game diffiuclt ? tomwaits says a combinaison I think he is right plus if you add the poor programming of a game you have some of the most frustrating games.

You allready listed some of them....

For me bad control can be really annoying the zelda plateformer on CD-i are the perfect examples poor control due to the limitation of the system make them almost unplayable.

Trevor Mc fur ion the Grescent Galaxy is alos for me one of the most difficult game but I know that soem poeple where able to finish it in one afternoon... So 2 questions
1. How is it possible for some people to stay sain enough to play Grescent galaxy until the end  ?
2. Why Was i not able to finish this game while I could finish POD on Gizmondo which is also quite difficult ?

I played POD over and over for days and I finally got to the final level which can not be finish because it is a scoring game. But I played overt and over the Grescnet Galxy but I can hardly get through the First planet due to the level design, poor hit detection, etc...

Which game is the hardier ? POD or Grescent Galaxy ?

I would have to say the hardest retro game I've ever played is Ghosts n Goblins. I broke many controllers trying to finish this game :102:

Probably the NES Castlevania for me - I just couldn't get any further than the Grim Reaper no matter how many attempts I had. The game is largely a memory test but constant stupid deaths and those Medusa Heads always foiled my attempts.

Thinking of fighting games, I have to mention Art of Fighting (the whole series though AoF3 is slightly easier), World Heroes 2 and Jet (the latter especially for it's nightmare final boss!) and Fatal Fury Wild Ambition (CPU level rockets every time at stage 3 and opponents become terminators!).

I'm waking this thread with this game:  Moon Cresta.  This is not an easy game!  Don't let the video fool you!

I've never played this but I've heard of it. Looks a lot like Galaga.

Yes, it does bear a resemblance but this one is tougher!

Wow, this thread was before my time!  ;D Some of the most difficult games for me are the R-Type, Gradius, and Thunder Force style shoot-'em-ups. I liken the gameplay to being a running back in the NFL and trying to punch through the defensive line. Shoot-'em-ups, especially the "bullet hell" ones, like to set a wall of death in front of you and make you wriggle your way around it. Despite this, I love shoot-'em-up games for their simplicity of gameplay and the attractive, anime-inspired art styles. Of course, I've played the Contras, Castlevanias, Mega Mans, et al., and remember those games being very challenging as well.

On the RPG side of things, I do remember having some trouble with Phantasy Star II. One of the most annoying mechanics was that each party member would join your squad at level 1 regardless of how late in the game you acquired them. You'd always have to backtrack to get their level up to quota because some of the enemy encounters are absolutely brutal. Also, The 7th Saga for the SNES was fairly difficult in the sense that, at any given time, one unbalanced enemy encounter could almost guarantee death. There is a (somewhat infamous within the 7th Saga fan community) YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6hFQZn6RmY) detailing this balancing issue where the player can't even survive one of the first random encounters in the game. Even if he spends a lot of money on potions, he barely has enough of them to offset the damage sustained from one battle. My experience with the game has been different--possibly because I picked a different starting character and I persevered till I was able to add another character to the party. But for that initial first third of the game where you have to fight solo, it's a grind. It was satisfying to beat.

The 4th level of R-Type has been a brick wall for me over the years. Perhaps I'm just crap at it rather than it being too difficult lol.
It has saved me buying the 2nd Hucard for PC Engine though. Maybe its a mental block to save me money.

You can still buy the game even though you suspect you'll never finish it. ;) Most of the shoot-'em-up games I own will never be completed by me in my lifetime, but I do like to collect them. Games like Hellfire and Wings of Wor--forget about it! Now that I think about it, I realized I left out several Genesis/Mega Drive games that are quite difficult, like X-Men and Sub-Terrania, but neglected to mention in my post. I think it's just an expectation for any Genesis owner: Many of these games were based on the tried-and-true arcade formula of making the game difficult to keep the quarters flowing. If I get flattened by a mini-boss halfway through a level and have to start from the beginning, I hardly give it a second thought because I'm expecting it to happen anyway. As someone said earlier, repetition is the key to conquering these games. The more you play, the more you learn from your mistakes and it elevates your play.

Yes! Hellfire is one of my all time favourite Mega Drive games. I've managed to reach the second loop but not much more. That was with a lot of attempts and practice though, doubt I could achieve it these days. Its an awesome game.
Gynoug (Wings of Wor) is another brilliant game. Two very good shouts there.

I had a thing for playing more modern bullet hell shooters a few years ago, particularly Giga Wing II on the Dreamcast. Thats a mental game thats hard as nails.
Psyvariar 2 was another one. Great risk and reward mechanic that made you play like a nutter for high scores.

I love shoot'em ups myself but I have no hope of ever finishing them!  There is something cathartic about shooting everying in sight, though.  LOL

Yeah that's how I am too. I love playing them but I'll never see the end of the game without using cheat codes!

I guess there are two camps when it comes to shooters. This would extend to any genre but I'll stick with shooters as an example.
Clearly this can be elaborated on and there's elements of crossover, but you get my point lol.

I agree with that.  Either way, each player has their own sense of accomplishment.  :)

Ive got the 2nd Rtype HUCard and its a waste of time (imho) without using a code from completing the first part.

I have done level 4 but its tough on most of the conversions and the arcade original. Whenever I play a highscore challenge I can usually get to that level without any fuss then its a game of attrition to beat it.

Alot of shooters are nearly impossible later on one you loose your power ups or you die in the wrong place. I'm looking at the Gradius series especially.  ;D
