Post by: TrekMD on October 01, 2012, 19:39:50 PM
So, let's look at another set of comparisons.  This time, Kung Fu Master!

That video has reminded me of 2 things:

1. Just how bloody terrible that Spectrum version is. Utterly atrocious and unplayable bile.

2. Just how good the Atari 2600 version is. It's better than many of the other versions on more powerful systems!

Never underestimate the power of a certain old console called the Atari 2600!  :)

There is also a much later sequal to this game called Vigilante, notice the near identical gameplay:

You and GAMEStm agree here, Speccy version has a place in Conversion Catasrophe:
They talk of:Horrible, inaccurate combat, sluggish movement, music being a painful mess, atrocius colour clash and crippling, stuttering scrolling.

They say 'Even the Atari 2600 produced a pretty decent port'.

Quick report on the Apple II version: One-legged handyman unzips flies, unleashing the beast on slightly more colourful handyman, all in complete silence!

C64 version, awarded GAMEStm Conversion Catastrophe (saying it should be played on PC Engine, gameplay feeling fraction smoother than Arcade too).

C64 conversion by Emeralad Software, who disregarded the C64's abilities.

C64 version suffered from:

Sluggish gameplay, copy-and paste level backgrounds, ugly visuals, ropey animation, slow gameplay+awful music.

They go onto say: 'there's a claim to be made that Vigilante was'nt very good in the 1st place'

But most random claim of all by GAMEStm:

....Conversion of a game that even the C16 should have been able to replicate in it's sleep'.

Think it's a toss up between that and the Oric version of Stun Runner, in terms of why was'nt in converted? LOL

Slightly off topic, but vigilante was one of my favourite titles back in the day. Yep it was basic but I just loved the style of it, the sound FX, graphics etc. and I loved how it showed off the power of the PCE. A very accurate conversion.

It's definitely arcade perfect
